"LIFE in the SLOW lane sure seems FAST"...

Dear Blog,

I've decided to put myself on a routine (well, of sorts).  Yes, it is because life on the slow lane seems so fast around here. I mean it's like I'm "technically" retired and yet NOT.  No-one puts in 120+ hours per month is retired.  I guess I simply like the idea of being retired so I have tried to cling on to it. Too bad. Time to get reality. I do like that I am a contract worker . I agree to a contract upgrade my State Tests and can pretty much call my own hours as long as the hours work for my clients and me. I am able to work my own plan and I have seen some successes in my work. Being able to see success in my line of work is not always the norm. It's not like I am working in a doll factory and can see the doll's arm once I attach it to the doll. That would be too simple for me. Why make life simple for a change, eh?

So anyhow, I need to make a routine that works at home for ME and also allows my work to fit in and not become to worn out. Pace myself...which is something I didn't do much of in the old days when I went beat 90 at all times. Now I am on beat 30 about half of the time and have a few beat 50 days part of the time. I didn't believe I'd slow down this much when I was younger (though I did get plenty of warnings from well-meaning older folks). That is probably a good thing or I may have given in to the laziness that youth often calls for.

I'm taking Mondays off just for me. No visitors, no long phone calls...I may even unplug the phone from midnight Sunday to midnight Monday. No house chores. The only cooking will be quick heat-up meals or sandwiches or a bowl of cereal. I will make a larger pot of tea that will last me the entire day. I like to make lots of tea, cool it then put it in a couple of quart-sized mason jars and pop them into the refrigerator. That way if I want a hot cup I just pour a cup and heat it in the microwave or I fill a glass with ice and pour the tea over the ice. If I have everything handy I'll be able to spend Mondays doing whatever it is that I want to do that week.

Mondays will be a day for reading, or painting, or napping or watching movies or writing in my Blog or working on a story. I might even make it a mini-spa day right at home. Perhaps I'll sit out on my deck, sip tea and read or write poetry all day. Whatever I do it will be mine and for just me.

Sounds like a great plan doesn't it. I also plan to take a couple of hours each day on regular days at home to be mine. The hours of work do put a dent on me but I'll stick at it a bit longer since it is working and we can always use the money what with Kevin being laid off from his work so much these last 2-3 years. The money I make is paltry compared to what he makes when he is working full time but it is steady and (so far) is always there. Of course if our wonderful state government keeps taking money from people programs I may well be out of a job also.

Kevin has gotten a taste of tent living and he isn't real keen on it. Of course if it ever comes to tent living we'll do it in the dry heat of the south and head to the cooler mountain regions in the real heat of the summers. He was very happy to find the small one bedroom apartment he's in now before the temps drop any lower. His last morning in the tent he woke to 24 degree weather. Not really doable for long.

I'll probably write more later. Time now to heat and eat. (S)

Bye Blog, JjB...

Sweet Jolie - Good for you! You deserve special time for yourself to do just as you please!

I went to my first physical therapy session yesterday morning and it went quite well. There was a lot of paperwork for self-evaluation and then the therapist had her own evaluation. Except for the falling-over part, I'm actually in pretty good shape, "considering." The therapist is one who has helped me with previous problems, my assistant helped last year - walking through the door was like homecoming without the football game.

One thing that bothered me about pt was that previously the initial three or four sessions would be closely supervised, then the rest would be my basically doing my exercises solo, supervised across a crowded room. It was agreed that I would not be left alone this time to do anything but would always have someone close enough to catch me. We're working on strengthening my core, hips and legs - two days per week. After a couple of hours, it was good to go home, have lunch and a long nap.

Years ago, my husband and I went to Nova Scotia in the fall - with a tent. The first night we settled by a brook, surrounded by the beautiful trees in their autumnal splendor, a little chill in the air. The temperature dropped quickly. By morning it was freezing and we spent the next nights in heated motel rooms. Husband says that my idea of roughing it is staying at a hotel without a spa or full service salon. Not true - I've never been to a spa, never had a professional manicure or pedicure - but I do like my indoor plumbing!

We're still in triple digits, but Sunday I changed out the cheap summer dishes for my grandmother's holiday set. In the late 1950's she began collecting "Friendly Village" by Johnson Bros. The dishes hold so many wonderful memories for me. I take joy in washing them by hand and don't trust anyone else to put them away. Family tradition. I also enjoy ironing her tablecloths for Thanksgiving and Christmas. My mother loved paper tablecloths and modern dinnerware - I'm stuck in a Currier & Ives version of the holidays and it works for me.

Son-shine in NY says the trees are starting to turn and the grandchildren are enthralled by so many pretty colors - wait until they see a real snow storm! DIL has bought them coats, mittens and scarves and the little ones can hardly wait to wear everything! They are visiting roadside stands and enjoying fresh-picked apples.

Daughter is in the midst of mid-terms, worrying as usual, but she'll do fine. She was a little surprised that graduate school has so much homework and papers but she's living her dream.

I check your blog regularly - although you are writing for your family, I also appreciate your sharing your days, your thoughts, your memories. Take care of yourself - I hope you had a happy Monday and that the week ahead will be good!
