"I Like This"...

Dear Blog,

Anderson Cooper from CNN News fame now has a new TV talk show so I thought I'd check it out today. I've always enjoyed his appearances (that I've seen) on other programs and  also think he is one of the best News people I've seen. He has been put in the time slot at 9 AM on the CBS channel where Ellen Degeneres used to be...Ellen D. is now being aired in Oprah's old slot at 4PM on CBS. Oprah went off to (if you can't afford cable you ain't going to see me land).

It seems that the "Suits"...the big boys who control..."Daytime TV" are trying to spice programming up a bit. The stupid asses will never make up for taking the "Soap Opera's" off the air...unless they would put the shows back on and bring all of the actors back. AND...how many men have you ever heard admit to a mistake? They were too blind to see that the Soaps were popular for near 80 years and perhaps...just perhaps...they should not mess with a good thing. DAH!! Plus, it is much cheaper for them to put on bogus reality shows, which have nothing to do with reality, peppered in with some seriously stupid and sad game shows.

Let's face it TV programming has been rotten ever since the writers strike a few years back. I wish we'd get back to 4 or 5 channels of good programs and get rid of all the cable channels that people are stupid enough to pay for just to watch repeats. The reason that the Cable TV channel companies were allowed to charge for their programming was that their programing would be (Commercial Free TV)...well Cable TV channels blast us with at least 14+ minutes of commercials per every hour. Now...TV channels Cable and local networks alike have bombard us with 1/2 hour to 1hour of paid advertising and info-commercials.

If you check out a printed TV guide you'll find hour upon hour of both of those listings on near all of the channels. What a rip-off. Still, one can't bitch too much because we (the public) allow the owners to get away with the piss-poor service and we allow the government to allow yet another group of big business people lie to the public and cheat us out of money. If anything the government has as much culpability as do the business people...especially since they passed laws that have made it so one dammed near needs to pay for Cable TV just to view the original channels. What can we expect from a government who allowed G. W. Bush to be a pretend President when Al Gore legally won the election.

Gosh, I can hardly talk about anything anymore without going into a rant. Seems even a mini-rant will do. I just about burst with anger over all of the things we...people...have given up for technology and most of us don't even see what we have lost. And of course being so helpless to do anything about it doesn't help at all. That could be a whole other post.

So today I watched Anderson Cooper's new talk show. I'm very, very impressed. I'M LIKING IT. He is so real. His mother, the famous Gloria Vanderbilt, was his guest. She looks like a very young and healthy 70 year old and I think Anderson said she is 87-years-old. She's sure lived an amazing and wonderful life. I love how they are with each other. Anderson has followed in her footsteps and has done many, many unusual and wonderful things. Judy Collins is one of Gloria V's best friends and she was on the program and sang the song "Amazing Grace" Glee style; Capella. What a voice.  It was a wonderful treat. They talked a lot about the impact that having a child who commits suicide has on the lives of the families that they leave behind. My heart wept as I listened. I teared up right along with them.

There have been two devastating suicides in my family (one was a murder/suicide) so three people have died in this strange manner in my family and it has affected so many people. I agree with G.V. saying one never completely gets over it. My Dad died still asking why his Dad had killed himself. Of course there was never a answer. Not even a note saying goodbye.

Anderson had his Mother share one of her favorite sayings and I think it is worth sharing with you.

"We were not put on this earth to see through each other...we were put on this earth to see each other through." Gloria Vanderbilt.

And then later I was watching "Keeping Up Appearances" on PBS when Hyacinth said, "Richard, do be careful dear of my special made plastic ware." I love, love, love that program and she always makes me LOL. Thank God for PBS, eh?

I'm off for now. Be happy.

Daniel...my son and Robin my friend...did you two divorce me? I never hear from either of you any more and I Miss you guys. Robin I can't even get into a couple of your blogs anymore and the new one that I can get to, to read, won't allow me to post a comment. I'm not a hot potato...you guys can't just drop me and not even say goodbye. Especially you Dan. Well, then again, I guess you can. You have.

Daisy, please tell me that you are still doing okay.

Bye Blog, JjB...

Sweet Jolie - yes, I'm okay and better than okay at times. The counts are gradually approaching normal and I'm feeling stronger and more energetic. I'm hoping this week's results will be good enough to let me start physical therapy. DH is finally going into the office instead of working at home (and checking on me every 10 minutes!). It's nice to be getting my independence back but I had to earn it.

Last week we went to another funeral - seems like we're attending more funerals than weddings. This was sudden, a 53 year old friend who seemed larger than life. He had a heart attack but hung on for a week before passing - a good dad, grandfather, husband and friend. I dressed up in heels, plopped on a wig, found my "funeral dress" still by the dryer from the last funeral, slapped on makeup and grabbed my cane (although I haven't been using it lately). Sure enough, I got tired enough to use the cane. DH took me to Long John Silver's for dinner afterward, satisfying a craving I've had for their shrimp.

My tastes have been all over the map - some stuff with strong flavors tastes okay, other old favorites made me barfy. Finally yesterday I was able to taste and enjoy bread - made a sandwich, best ever! The bad taste could have been due to the chemo or antibiotics, whatever it was, it's improving! I've now lost 70 pounds (the really hard way) - I haven't admitted that to anyone else, kind of ashamed to admit I had that much to lose and still look pudgy (okay, I'm still overweight by about 30 pounds), just don't want to backslide. My arthritis is better, too.

TV ads - I understand the companies need them - but the same ones, over and over? Before I got "sick," DH got a DVR so I can record 2 shows at a time. I love being able to fast forward and am the mistress of the clicker! Anderson Cooper is charming and Gloria V. is such a lovely, strong woman - I like them both. I used to wear her line of jeans when I was much younger (and thinner) - they fit much better than any other brand. Unfortunately I missed the show - it's on during my afternoon nap and I forgot to record it.

Take care of yourself, my friend! We're hoping for double digits by the weekend - it's been a long summer even with my weeks in air conditioned splendor in the hospital and the "home." Is it fall there yet? Do you cook fried green tomatoes?

Be well and safe - thanks for thinking of me!

I'm still out here just busy with school, work, and sports. Plus you don't post as often anymore so I don't check as often. Things are good and everyone is doing fine. Love Dan

Sweet Jolie - update: I start physical therapy on Monday. My primary goal is to not fall; my secondary goal is to get strong enough to get up by myself if I do fall - that's going to take some hard work as I've lost a lot of muscle strength. I'm learning too that my hospital stay was much more serious than I thought or had been told initially. The oncology nurses are calling me a "miracle," which is kind of scary.

We went out to dinner last night and I had eggplant parmesan - comfort food since I was a little girl. Also we stopped at the grocery store for bread and milk and a few sale items.

Have you read "The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo?" DH read the series after his brother recommended it, but wasn't sure if I'd like it. I see there's a movie version coming out - Daniel Craig? I've been doing more knitting than reading lately - and laundry, cooking, etc.

Have you seen the giant pumpkins this year? They are awesome. One farmer said his was adding 40 pounds a day! I've always wanted to grow a giant pumpkin but this is not a good place to even try - although I did try a few years ago, stubborn, aren't I? It takes a big commitment to be successful.

We're aiming for 107 today, might see double digits on Monday. I'm so ready for cool weather, hearty soups and the holidays!

Take care of yourself, my friend! Be well and happy!
